What It Is
The Vitality Transform Algorithm (VTA) is a computational color science method developed by Ways Co., LLC. It is the first method to derive the mathematically correct self-luminous configuration of any color from that color's own properties — without assumptions about the display, the medium, or the rendering environment.
Every color exists in two fundamentally distinct states as perceived by the human visual system: a reflective state, in which the color is seen as a surface receiving light, and a self-luminous state, in which the color is seen as a source emitting light. These are not opposite ends of a brightness scale. They are distinct, documentable, and computable states — and until now, no method existed to derive one from the other.
The VTA solves this problem.
What It Does
The VTA takes any color as input and returns that color's psychophysically correct self-luminous configuration — the specific combination of luminance, chroma, and spectral spread at which the human visual system classifies the color as a light source rather than a surface.
It does this continuously. A single scalar parameter — the Vitality Parameter — moves any color across the full spectrum between its reflective and self-luminous states, preserving the color's identity throughout. A red remains recognizably red at every point in the transform. The method is not a brightness adjustment. It is a state transition.
- Medium-agnostic Operates at the color state layer, not the display layer. Output is a color state description that any rendering system can consume.
- Input-agnostic Functions with zero contextual inputs and becomes more precise as inputs become available. Ambient light, display capability, interaction state — any of these can inform the computation. None are required.
- AI-callable Any system capable of producing a normalized value can influence the VTA's output without knowledge of the underlying computation. Natively compatible with AI-driven design, generation, and rendering systems.
The WAYS Mark
The animated WAYS mark on the homepage is a live demonstration of the VTA in operation. The mark is not a static image. It is a color state — driven by a temporal engine calibrated to the documented sensitivity profile of the human visual system — that moves between the reflective and self-luminous states in real time.
The behavior of the mark is the technology. No two cycles are identical. The mark is alive in the same sense that a self-luminous source is alive: its state is continuous, responsive, and governed by the same psychophysical principles that govern how the human eye perceives light.
